Letters of the Anthony family, 1861-1865.

The letters to Callie J. Anthony, Arnoldton, Campbell County, Va., from her brothers B.H. Anthony and John W. Anthony, and from her cousin J.G. Harden discuss family news and Confederate camp life. Of interest are two letters discussing the vote on the proposed "negro bill" to enlist African Americans in the Confederate Army. Also included is a copy of Robert E. Lee's General Order No. 9 to the Army of Northern Virginia, 10 April 1865, thanking the troops and bidding them farewell.

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870.
